Internet has reached 95 percent of the villages in the country, mobile users have increased by this much in the last 10 years


Under the ‘Digital India’ initiative, 3G or 4G internet facility is currently available in 95 percent of the villages of the country. This information was given by the central government on Friday. According to the information given by the Ministry of Communications, there are a total of 95.44 crore internet subscribers in India (March 2024). Out of this, 39.83 crore users are in rural India.

The ministry further said that out of a total of 6,44,131 villages in the country, 3G/4G mobile internet facility is available in 6,12,952 villages (April 2024). In such a situation, 95.15 percent of the villages in the country have internet facility. Under the ‘Digital India’ initiative, the government has taken several steps to connect metros, tier-2 and tier-3 cities along with connecting rural and interior areas.

The number increased from 25.15 crores to 95.44 crores

The total number of mobile subscribers in the country has increased from 25.15 crores to 95.44 crores in the last decade. It has increased at a CAGR of 14.26 percent on an annual basis. The government has said that in the last 10 years, the telecom network has been expanded to all corners of the country. This includes tier 2 and tier 3 cities as well as interior areas of the country.

Changes in rules for installing mobile towers in border areas

The government started the ‘BharatNet’ project to provide internet broadband facilities in rural areas. Its objective was to connect all the gram panchayats of the country with optical fiber cable. The government said that out of 2.2 lakh gram panchayats, 2.13 lakh gram panchayats have been connected to BharatNet. In August 2022, the government changed the rules for installing mobile towers in border areas, so that mobile internet facility could be made available to more people.
